A master logistician, Meigs saw to the supply of every Union army from his appointment as quartermaster general in May 1861 through to the end of the war. Indispensable to the war effort as a soldier, Meigs was also skilled as an engineer, architect, scientist, and artist. Many of his contributions are in use to this day.
